COLLIDING BEAMS: PRESEhy STATUS; AtiD THE SLAC PROJECT*
نویسنده
چکیده
The field of colliding-beam physics was born in 1958 with the start of construction of the first colliding-beam device by a Princeton-Stanford collaboration. This device, a 2 x 550 MeV electron-electron storage ring, yielded its first results on electron-electron scattering in 1963 and has since been dismantled. However, it spawned a host of more powerful offspring in Western Europe, the USSR, snd here in the U. S. The widespread interest inthesecolliding-beam devices is of course due to the new kinds of phenomena they can study in particle physics and to the enormous centerof-mass energies they can reach at much less cost than conventional accelerators (a 2 X 3 GeV electron ring is equivalent in center-of-mass energy to a 36,000 GeV accelerator beani hitting a stationary electron target; a 2 X 28 GeV proton ring like the ISR at CERN is equivalent to an 1800 GeV proton beam hitting a liquid hydrogen target; a 2 X 400 C&V proton ring which could be built at NAL is equivalent to a 340,000 GeV proton beam on a hydrogen target).

We present our plans for a Monte-Carlo code simulating all possible combinations of (electromagnetic) interactions between colliding electron, positron, and both high-energy and l~er photon beams, based on the ABEL code for beam-beam interaction. The implementation and first results for the laser-e– interaction are described. *Work supported by the Department of Energy contract DE-AC-76SFO0515 ...
متن کاملOperating Results from Spear
The SLAC electron-positron colliding-beam project SPEAR was completed and stable colliding beams were achieved in April, 1972, after a construction period of approximately 20 months. Since that time, an active experimental high-energy physics program has begun in addition to a program of continued studies of accelerator physics. This paper discusses only the accelerator physics results as well ...
متن کاملDIRC for a Higher Luminosity B Factory
The Dirc, a novel type of Cherenkov ring imaging device, is the primary hadronic particle identification system for the BABAR detector at the asymmetric B-factory Pep-II at SLAC. It is based on total internal reflection and uses long, rectangular bars made from synthetic fused silica as Cherenkov radiators and light guides. BABAR began taking data with colliding beams in late spring 1999. This ...
متن کاملThe Plasma Lens as an e-e- Luminosity Enhancer: SLAC Experimental Results
It is important to demonstrate the use of plasmas for focusing positron and electron beams at high energy. By reducing the transverse area of colliding beams the plasma optical element affords a potential simplicity for enhancing the luminosity in the interaction region of linear colliders. Focusing of both transverse dimensions as well as both charge states has generated interest in this techn...
متن کاملThe Status of the Slac Linear Collider and of the Mark Ii Detector ’ ) -
At SLAC we are currently involved in the exciting challenge of commissioning the first example of a new type of colliding beam accelerator, the SLAC Linear Collider, or SLC. The goals of the SLC are twc+fold. It will explore the concept of linear colliders, and it will allow the study of physics on the Z” resonance. It accomplishes these goals by exploiting the existing SLAC linac and the large...
